Our Philosophy

Hip-Hop is a movement and culture that started to emerge in the late 60s and early 70s in the USA in an environment of strong racial discrimination. Today it incorporates a multitude of powerful art forms such as MCing, DJing, Street Dances, Graffiti, Beatboxing and more. At Street Dance Halifax we value Hip-Hop's rich and complex history and advocate that teaching, sharing, and learning about its elements always be done with respect of the culture, its origin and evolution.
This is why at Street Dance Halifax our classes focus on the freestyle aspect of the dances and on giving room for improvisation and self-expression around the knowledge and fundamentals progressively acquired. In this spirit we will always do our best to remain true to the dance styles and we will always strongly encourage the expression of your own personalities and push forward your growth and development as dancers.

Teacher

Gaël

Gaël started training in Locking in 2012 and gradually picked up other Hip-Hop dance styles in his dance journey. Since the start he has continuously travelled around the globe (France, USA, Sweden, Germany, Canada among others) to perfect his dance and learn about the culture from internationally recognized dancers and pioneers. Teaching various Hip-Hop dance styles in Europe and the USA since 2014, Gaël has also participated in battles and performances internationally; and while he enjoys competitions, he considers the social aspect of the dance truly fundamental. Now in Nova Scotia, Gaël aspires to share his passion locally and inspire dancers and non-dancers via interactions, self-expression, and exploration of movement in freestyle, where “there are no mistakes” and “having fun” are paramount.

Dance classes taught: Locking, House, Freestyle Hip-Hop, Freestyle Exploration.
